ATTENTION: All fungus, please report to the nail salon.
Now personally, I prefer optimism, so this isn’t a post about “blogging off” nail salons, but it is about some tips and tricks to keep you and your feet safe and healthy.
But first a bit about fungus:
It can be very easy to become infected by fungus. Often people pick them up from direct contact with infectious surfaces, from the local bathing area, or even from getting dirt in your shoes during running.
But is it really so bad??
Fungi can infect the skin causing the renowned athletes foot, an itch, red spots, and flakey skin; this is fairly easy to rid yourself of. But its infamous partner in crime, the “nail infection” can cause some serious distress. Thick, crumbly, discoloured nails, prone to infection, and very difficult to treat, nobody wants this!
So “what are the risks at the nail salon?” one may ask…
On the whole salons are getting much better with their infection control. Most are using sterilisers for instruments and wiping down surfaces between clients. The problem arises with the nail varnish, and anything they re-use from one person to the next without sterilisation.

Using your own nail varnish and products, researching the salon, and asking about their sterilisation techniques, are essential. And if you are in any doubt head along to your local podiatrist for prompt diagnosis and treatment of the fungus! The earlier the better, especially when it comes to the nail variety!
